Church Leaders welcome Papal Visit
“England’s churches welcome the Pope’s visit
Archbishops Rowan Williams and Vincent Nichols and Commissioner Betty Matear of the Salvation Army, the Presidents of Churches Together in England,, today welcomed Pope Benedict XVI’s visit, and expressed the hope that it would be a source of encouragement to all England’s churches.” It went on to say that they look forward to joining the Pope in Westminster Abbey for the celebration of Evening Prayer, which will be a significant stage in his pilgrimage. Representatives from member churches to CT in England will be praying with and for the Pope on 17 September to welcome him not simply as the head of the RC church but as a fellow Christian and fellow pilgrim. Fr Bill will be present at this service.
Other leaders from CT in England added their welcome – Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateriar and Gt Britain of the Greek Orthodox Church, the British Quakers, the United Reformed Church, Revd Dr Martyn Atkins of the Methodist Church, Revd Jonathan Edwards of the Baptist Union, Bishop Wilton Powell National Overseer of the Church of God of Prophecy, Fr Olu Abiola President of the Council of African and Caribbean Churches, the Lutheran Council of Gt Britain , the Rt Revd Dr Geevarghese Mar Theodosius Diocesan Bishop of the Mar Thoma Church in England.

With the expected cuts in services provided by Central Government and Local Authorities will there be even more requests (or demands!) that the voluntary sector respond to the needs of individuals and communities? As a vital part of the voluntary sector are the faith communities able to share in the response?

I'm not aware of any event that is being held in Bath to recognise the importance of this moment in the history of the Christian Church. Is anyone or any Church planning a special service? The first two weeks of June seem to be the appropriate time. David Pendle
